Frubbing Grungas
Good Morning All (one)!! It is now late June in the Mid South and the worst of the weeds are behind us. We had such a wet and cold Winter, combined with a warm, wet Spring that many of you have unfortunately learned more than you would like about Fungus in Turfgrass. That being said, be cautious of what you can now EASILY identify as the beginning stages of a Fungus with another “Pest”, known as Grubs. Grubs will feed on the roots of your Turfgrass and start to thin the Blades of your grass. The thinning, combined with some yellow discoloration means it is time to get the shovel (before you get your wallet and purchase Fungicide). Take your Flat shovel and etch out a one foot X one foot piece of Sod, about 2 inches in depth. Peel the sod from the ground and bend it around until the soil lightly begins to separate from the root structure. If you see a few (2-3) yellow/white creatures with purplish/ gray heads, you have an infestation of Grubs. You can buy Grub poison at your local nursery or Home Depot. Follow imstructions per the label and reeat the Sod removal process in 10-14 days. ANY remaining grubs should be DEAD. Treating for Grubs not only protects your grass, but also helps make your neighbors yard look more attractive to any Moles that might be lurking!! Moles eat up to 2Xs their body weight a day (like myself). If you remove the food source, you have probably removed the Mole. Have a Great Day!! The Gardener’s Shadow
